Harcum Names New President

3/26/2007

BRYN MAWR, PA (March 26, 2007) – The Board of Trustees at Harcum College (www.harcum.edu) announces that Dr. Jon Jay DeTemple, formerly the president of Post University in Waterbury, CT, has been named President of the two-year college, effective June 1, 2007.

Dr. DeTemple becomes the 11th president in Harcum’s 92-year history.  He succeeds Dr. Charles H. Trout, who died last September.  Since that time, Dr. Edward R. D’Alessio, Harcum’s Provost, has been serving as Acting President.

“We are delighted to have Dr. DeTemple on board as President of Harcum College, as he continues the effort that was started by Chuck Trout and sustained by Ed D’Alessio to expand and enhance Harcum's position as one of the nation's leading two-year independent colleges,” said Dennis S. Marlo, Chair of the Harcum Board of Trustees, “Dr. DeTemple brings a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and a strong ‘can do’ attitude to the job.

“Throughout an arduous search process that involved in-depth meetings with trustees, senior staff, faculty, students, and alumni, Dr. DeTemple proved himself to be an energetic and impassioned advocate for Harcum College, its students, and its mission.  He has a proven track record of commitment to educational philosophy and pushing the envelope when it comes to embracing change, and the challenges of growth at a private institution.”

“My wife, Karen and I, are very excited about joining the Harcum Family. I was impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication of the faculty, staff and trustees. I’m looking forward to continuing Harcum's mission to serve its students and help them discover and nurture those skills that open up life's possibilities,” said Dr. DeTemple.

Dr. DeTemple has over 20 years of experience in higher education as president and vice president of a college.  At Post University - during a period of low enrollment, struggling relations with state higher education and regional accrediting agencies, financial problems and a great deal of turnover in general - Dr. DeTemple led a revitalization plan that expanded the college’s program offerings, and successfully transformed the institution from not-for-profit to a for-profit institution.   Leading Post University through a ten-year accreditation review with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; Dr. DeTemple simultaneously restored community awareness, regained support from the area’s legislative contingent, and was influential in raising over one-million dollars.

During Post University’s resurgence, Dr. DeTemple initiated the institutional advancement function and received accreditation for Bachelor of Science degree programs, and online associate and bachelor degrees in legal studies, international business, finance, and more.  He oversaw the implementation of evening and weekend classes; and worked in conjunction with the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium, positioning Post University to become the largest provider of online programs in the State of Connecticut.

In addition to a rewarding career in administration, Dr. DeTemple achieved significant success in the corporate world.  As an Operations Manager for Paychex, Inc. in Rochester, NY from 1989 until 1990, Dr. DeTemple was responsible for providing payroll and tax preparation, employee benefits, and personnel services for a company branch comprising over 2,000 businesses.  In 1991, and for the next seven years he was a  senior manager for Paychex - ENS; overseeing electronic funds transfers that exceeded two-billion dollars per month in tax payments, direct deposit, and invoice banking.

In addition to working at Post University; Dr. DeTemple served as vice president of administration at SUNY College of Technology in Alfred, NY from 1975 until 1982; later being promoted to the title of executive vice president from 1982 until 1986.  Responsible for the execution of an annual $18 million budget; Dr. DeTemple supervised the finance and business sectors of the college’s accounting, bursar, purchasing, human resources, computing and auxiliary service departments during his tenure.  As president of the Genoa Art Institute in Genoa, NY; Dr. DeTemple managed staffing, program development, and worked with the chairmen of the board of directors on fundraising issues.  Prior to his administrative assignment at Post University, Dr. DeTemple served as vice president of Mitchell College in New London, CT from 1998 until 1999.  Working with the board of trustees, finance and facilities committees, he effectively administered strategic planning, modeling and budget preparation as necessary for the growth of the institution.

Dr. DeTemple obtained a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Syracuse University; an M.B.A. from Syracuse University; and a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University.

The Board of Trustees wishes to thank Dr. Edward R. D’Alessio for his fine service as Acting President during the transition since Dr. Trout’s death.  Dr. D’Alessio will continue as Acting President until the installation of  Dr. DeTemple.  At that time, Dr. D’Alessio will resume his duties as Provost.
