Donna Broderick, Program Director, Medical Laboratory Technician

Professional Biography
I received a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Rosemont College in Rosemont, PA and completed my clinical training at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, PA to earn a B.S. in Medical Technology. After graduation I succeeded in passing the ASCP Board of Registry certification exam to earn the title of MT(ASCP). I was employed by SmithKline labs in both their clinical and pharmaceutical divisions while working toward my Master’s Degree in education at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. PA. Missing the clinical environment, I left SmithKline and accepted a position at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, PA as a stat lab technologist.
My experience at Harcum began as an adjunct faculty member in the Medical Laboratory Technician department while working at Lankenau. I became MLT program director in 1997 and currently serve as program director for both the Allied Health Science department and Clinical Laboratory science department, which includes MLT, Histology and Phlebotomy. My achievements since becoming program director include:
1. Maintaining the high standards set by NAACLS for Clinical Laboratory program accreditation
2. Meeting NCA certification requirements to earn the title CLS(NCA)
3. Receiving the Lindback Award for outstanding teaching in May 2006
4. Expanding the MLT program at Harcum to an on-line program, placing Harcum College as a nationally recognized two-year college
5. Initiating the online Histotechnican program
6. Initiating a successful phlebotomy certificate program offered through the School of Continuing Studies
I believe that my accomplishments are a result of enjoying my profession. My philosophy has always been to pursue what you enjoy and success will follow.
Teaching Philosophy
I offer my students my experience, understanding, and commitment to the laboratory profession. I have high expectations of my students, but also offer my support and guidance to help them achieve their goals. I believe that both teaching and learning should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Personal Information
I enjoy the challenge of maintaining a professional career while having a busy family life, sharing my home with my husband and three children as well as a variety of pets that include goats, chickens, guinea pigs, tropical fish and a dog. I am active in my community as a youth group advisor for my church and assisting with 4H club activities.
