2007-08 Season Outlook
                                    2007-08 Season Outlook

After a stellar 30-3 season in 2006-07 which culminated in Harcum’s first ever Region 19 championship, the Bears set out to defend their title with 14 newcomers and just 4 returning players from last season’s squad.  Harcum lost eight players from last year’s championship team to graduation, including four starters.  All eight of those players are currently suiting up for 4-year college programs, including Ryan Bogn (Longwood) and Tariek Belcher (Shippensburg), who combined to score nearly 2,000 points and led Harcum to a 51-13 record during the two seasons on the Main Line.

Fortunately for Bear’s Head Coach Drew Kelly, their lone returning starter is point guard Jamal Jackson, a first-team All-Region 19 selection a year ago.  As a freshman, Jackson averaged 15 points per game, dished out over 5 assists, and shot a stellar 55% from the field.  Look for a talented cast of newcomers to compete for playing time opposite Jackson in the backcourt.  Sophomore wings Brandon Smalls, Srdjan Skundric and Brian Arthur, and freshmen Julius Gray, Melvin Calhoun, Micah Covert, and C.J. Scott comprise a deep and talented backcourt.

In the frontcourt, Harcum returns two key players from last season in sophomores Kevon Davis and Shakiyl Reid.  Davis enjoyed a solid freshman campaign, averaging 6 points and 6 rebounds per game in a season in which he was slowed by injuries.  Reid averaged nearly 10 points per game off the bench last season, and provides Coach Kelly with great low post scorer.  Joining Davis and Reid in the frontcourt are freshmen Greg Avila, Andrew Young, Charles Okwandu, Mike Buckley and Gary Artis.

The Bears will play a significantly upgraded schedule that features four in-season tournaments, including a return to the Cecil Holiday Tournament on December 21-22nd.  Harcum will open its regular season on November 10th when the travel to Bel Air, Maryland to play Erie Community College in the Harford Tip-off Classic.   You can follow the Harcum Bears all season on the web at: www.harcum.edu/PS_ATH_Mens_Basketball.aspx
