HARCUM CLOSES OUT 2016-17 SEASON WITH 22 WINS
Bryn Mawr, Pa. (March 5, 2017)--The Harcum College men's basketball team has concluded another successful season in 2016-17, as the Bears finished the year with a 22-9 overall record, and runner-up finish in the NJCAA Division I Region XV Tournament. It marked the 12th consecutive season that Harcum has won 20 or more games, dating back to the men's basketball program's inception in 2005-06.
The Bears were led this season by a triumvirate of sophomores, point guard Milik Gantz and forwards Pauly Paulicap and Luidgy Laporal. Gantz established a new school career record for assists. The 6'3" guard averaged 13.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg, and 6.1 apg on the season, making him the only juco player in the country to average over 10/6/6 for the season. Paulicap, one of the most athletic players in the nation, averaged 3 blocks per game, ranking in the top 10 nationally. The 6'8" Laporal averaged 11 ppg and a team-leading 7.5 rpg, and also led the team shooting 67% from the field.
Despite its relatively short history, the Harcum College men's basketball program has a strong tradition of success in both victories on the court and placement of its student-athletes to NCAA programs. Harcum is the only NJCAA Division I men's basketball program in Pennsylvania and NJCAA Region XIX. Under the leadership of Head Coach Drew Kelly, the program began in 2005. In the ten seasons since, the Bears have compiled a remarkable 303 wins against just 76 defeats, giving the program an all time winning percentage of .800. Harcum has finished in the top 10 nationally four times (twice in the top 5). Harcum has won at least 20 games in every season since the program in 2005. The 2013-14 Harcum Bears won a school record 32 games and advanced the NJCAA Division I final four in Hutchinson, Kansas. Five players from the 2013-14 squad signed with NCAA Division I programs. The 2009-2010 season was another record setting season, as the Bears won 25 consecutive games and captured the nation's #1 ranking in the NJCAA Division I poll for the first time in school history, in the process becoming the first Region XIX team to be ranked #1 since 1974. Six players from the class of 2010 signed with NCAA Division I programs.
Harcum basketball alumni have transferred to some of the top NCAA Division I programs in the nation. Harcum grads can be found on rosters in the Big East, ACC, WAC, Big South, MEAC, Mid American Conference, Metro Athletic Conference, and Ohio Valley Conference. Recent transfers currently on NCAA rosters include Ivan Cruz Uceda (Miami-FL), Shevon Thompson (George Mason--a 2nd-team all-Atlantic 10 pick last season), Ibn Muhammad (Iona), and Leo Vincent (Southern Illinois).
