HARCUM CAPTURES REGION 19 CHAMPIONSHIP!
Bryn Mawr, Pa. March 5, 2017) -- The Harcum College women's basketball team finished a stellar season in 2016-17 with a 25-8 overall record, and captured the 5th Region 19 championship in school history with an 86-64 win over Essex County College in the championship game. It was the most wins in season for the program since 2010-11, and the Bears finished the year ranked #20 in the final NJCAA Division II women's basketball poll.
Individual accolades went to sophomore Lauren Chambers, who won Region 19 Tournament MVP, and freshmen Jayana Ervin and Shenice Gresham, who were both named to the All-Region 19 first team.
The Harcum women's basketball team was the college's first sports program to participate in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) beginning with the 2004-05.
Since that time, the Lady Bears have established themselves as NJCAA Division II national power. Harcum has won four NJCAA Region XIX championships, advancing all the way to the final eight nationally in 2011, and seen dozens of Lady Bears players transfer to 4-year college to continue their playing careers. Legends from past seasons include Danielle Jones and Kristen Woodridge, who guided the Lady Bears to a 27-1 record in the programs 1st season of competition, and then helped Harcum capture its first ever NJCAA Region XIX title as sophomores. Another powerful backcourt combination was Ana Cruz and Sironda Chambers, who each scored over 1,000 career points, and guided Harcum to a pair of region titles.
