Coronal Polishing

On April 29, 2010, the scope of practice for Expanded Function Dental Assistants was expanded and now includes performing coronal polishing, administering fluoride treatments, and taking impressions for athletic appliances. Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry requires a 3-hour clinical course in coronal polishing by March 31, 2013. This requirement is one time only and due by 2013. This course is NOT required with each renewal period.

As a result of the change to the Dental Law and Board Regulations, expanded function dental assistants are required to comply with the new continuing education requirements relating to coronal polishing. Below please find pertinent information relating to these new requirements. Expanded function dental assistants must complete 3 of the 10 required hours of continuing education in the area of coronal polishing in order to renew in 2013 for the 2013-2015 biennial period.

Unless an exemption applies, an expanded function dental assistant who received their initial certification after March 31, 2011 will need to complete the 3 hours of continuing education in the area of coronal polishing in order to renew in 2015.

Expanded function dental assistants exempt from the requirement to complete the 3 hours of continuing education in coronal polishing are as follows:

  • Expanded function dental assistants who are also licensed as dental hygienists.
  • Expanded function dental assistants who can document that they have completed coursework including coronal polishing as part of their education at a Board-approved EFDA education program at any time after June 28, 2010.
  • Expanded function dental assistants who can document that they have completed a course in coronal polishing of at least 3 hours offered by an approved program sponsor at any time after June 28, 2010.

NOTE: The 3 credit hour requirement in the area of coronal polishing may not be met through video, online or distance education. The course must be completed by physical attendance at a hands-on clinical training course offered by an approved program sponsor or an approved EFDA education program.

Harcum's Coronal Polishing course offers students three continuing education credits.

The course will include instruction on types of stain, equipment options and polishing product recommendations as well as contraindications in relation to the medically compromised patient. Fluoride application will provide a basic understanding of different types of fluoride and their recommendations for use as well as the appropriate application techniques. This program is a “hands on” clinic course with class participation.
