Lt. Governor Jim Cawley
Bryn Mawr, PA – April 25, 2014 -- The Honorable Jim Cawley, Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will be the speaker for Harcum College’s 98th Commencement at 11 a.m. on Saturday May 17, 2014.
The Commencement will be held in a tent on the Great Lawn of the Academic Center at Harcum’s Bryn Mawr Campus, 750 Montgomery Avenue in Bryn Mawr, PA.
“It is a tremendous honor to have Lieutenant Governor Cawley join us as Commencement speaker this year,”
Harcum College President Jon Jay DeTemple said.
“His commitment to public service and his devotion to the State of Pennsylvania can inspire our graduates to dedicate themselves to their professions as well.”
Cawley, the Commonwealth’s 32nd Lieutenant Governor, took office on January 18th, 2011. He has a number of key responsibilities, in addition to serving as Acting Governor in the event the Governor is unable to carry out his duties. As Lt. Governor, he serves as the President of the Senate, oversees the Board of Pardons, and chairs the Governor’s Local Government Advisory Committee.
In 2011, Governor Corbett appointed Cawley to chair the Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission, which brought together representatives from the natural gas industry, environmental advocacy groups, academia and state and local government. In March of 2012, he won national recognition for his work on Marcellus Shale when he received the 2012 Public Leadership in Energy and Environmental Stewardship Award from General Electric in partnership with the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA).
Following the floods caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in 2011, the Governor asked Cawley to lead the disaster recovery task force. He brought together several state agencies and coordinated response efforts between the federal, state and local emergency management agencies in 20 different counties. The state’s response to the flood earned praise from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Lt. Governor Cawley began his career in public service in 2005, when he was appointed to the Bucks County Board of Commissioners. In 2007, he was elected to a full term as commissioner.
As a County Commissioner, he worked to provide assistance to expand Bucks County Community College, open a state-of-the-art, 9-1-1 call center, and built a new training facility for volunteer firefighters. He also helped to form the Economic Development Advisory Board to strengthen business initiatives, implementation and marketing in the county to help create jobs.
A graduate of Bishop Egan High School, Cawley graduated cum laude from Temple University's College of Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He received a law degree from Temple University School of Law.
