A career as a Phlebotomy Technician is a rewarding path for someone who desires to work directly with patients. Phlebotomists use care and skill to obtain blood specimens from patients for analysis in the clinical laboratory. Technologists and physicians depend upon the phlebotomist to collect quality patient specimens in order to produce quality laboratory results. Phlebotomy technicians are trained to create an atmosphere of trust and confidence in patients while drawing blood specimens in a skillful and safe manner. Employment opportunities include, but are not limited to, hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, laboratories, and blood banks.
Please note that applicants with a positive FBI fingerprint record, criminal background, or child abuse may not be accepted by our clinical affiliates for praticum placement. Students are required to prove immunity to Hepatitis B, Varicella, Measles, Mumps and Rubella, obtain the TdaP and influenza (seasonal) vaccinations, as well as Tuberculosis screening. Students must also have a physical examination, proof of health insurance, and complete a urine drug screen prior to attending the clinical practicum portion of the program. Students are responsible for completing all information required by the Castle Branch electronic application. Potential students should refer to the Harcum College Phlebotomy Handbook for more information.
In response to the spread of the Delta variant, Harcum College has instituted a vaccine requirement (submit proof of vaccination) for the Bryn Mawr Campus as of September 2, 2021, for all students, faculty, staff, and adjuncts.
